Chapter Seven

The walk back to Swissmen Sweets was cold and dark. It was well after six in the evening now, and this late in the year, the sun had set over an hour ago. Despite the darkness and the cold, I felt myself drawn to the candy cane box again. I was no closer to finding out who my secret admirer was than I had been when I discovered my first note.

I knew if I spoke to Cousin Clara about it, she would ask me why I needed to know who it was. Maybe she would even tell me that I should just enjoy being admired. But that wasn’t how I was. It was why I had never fit well in my old conservative district. I had this need to know and ask why and how. I was like Bailey in that way. I wished that I had told Bailey about the note before she left for New York. She was so clever. I knew she would have been able to solve the case, if I could even call it a case, in no time at all.

Did it matter? I wondered. If I had a suitor, a real suitor, he should have the nerve to come up to me and tell me how he felt instead of sending me ambiguous notes. Did I really want to be courted by a coward? But was the person being cowardly or romantic? If romantic, of course I wanted to know who it was. I sighed. It was so infuriating. I wasn’t sure how to go about finding out.

I had checked the candy cane box less than an hour ago, but I was so close to it, so I couldn’t resist checking it one more time before I went in for the evening. I had many candy cane notes to prepare.

I lifted the latch and put my hand in the box. There was another note there. It was amazing how many notes appeared in the box. I thought by this point Margot’s idea had raised over one hundred dollars. That was over one hundred notes. The church youth group was going to be very busy on Christmas Eve delivering all those candy canes; that was for sure.

I pulled out the note, and in the glow of the red and green twinkle lights that had been wrapped around the gazebo, I could see that the envelope was addressed to me. My breath caught; it was in the memorable, slanted handwriting of my secret admirer.

My heart soared, but then it came crashing back to earth as I glanced across Main Street at Esh Family Pretzels. What if Abel had sent the notes as a cruel prank? He did seem to know something about the Candy Cane Exchange. Or had he been bluffing to get under my skin? I couldn’t be sure.

With more unease than I had felt when I opened the other two notes, I opened this one.

“Sweetest Charlotte, You are a bright light in the village.
